A Functional Airway Perspective
Rather than treating isolated symptoms, Dr. Zaghi evaluates how structure, function, and breathing interact to affect sleep quality, growth, and long-term health.
Dr. Zaghi graduated from Harvard Medical School, completed residency in ENT (Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery) at UCLA, and a Sleep Surgery Fellowship at Stanford University. The focus of his sub-specialty training is on the comprehensive treatment of tongue-tie, nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea. He is very active in clinical research relating to sleep-disordered breathing, with over 97+ peer-reviewed research publications in the fields of neuroscience, head and neck surgery, and sleep-disordered breathing.
Dr. Soroush Zaghi is an otolaryngologist and sleep surgeon with advanced training in the evaluation and treatment of sleep and breathing disorders in adults and children.
After graduating from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Zaghi completed his residency in Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA and a fellowship in Sleep Surgery at Stanford University.
His clinical interests include obstructive sleep apnea, upper airway resistance, nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, tongue-tie and tethered oral tissues, snoring, dysfunctional breathing patterns, and orofacial myofunctional disorders.
Dr. Zaghi is also actively involved in clinical research and professional education related to sleep-disordered breathing, airway function, tongue-tie, myofunctional therapy, craniofacial development, and surgical treatment of airway obstruction.
Looking Beyond Individual Symptoms
Symptoms such as snoring, mouth breathing, poor sleep, nasal congestion, and oral dysfunction can have multiple contributing factors. Rather than focusing on a single symptom or structure, Dr. Zaghi takes a comprehensive approach to evaluating the upper airway and related functions.
Functional Airway Evaluation
Assessment considers both airway anatomy and how the airway functions during breathing and sleep.
Specialized Sleep Surgery Expertise
Advanced fellowship training in sleep surgery provides a highly specialized perspective on the evaluation and treatment of upper airway obstruction.
Nasal & Oral Function
When clinically appropriate, evaluation may include nasal breathing, tongue mobility, oral function, and other factors that could be relevant to a patient’s symptoms.
Multidisciplinary Care
Treatment may incorporate or coordinate with myofunctional therapy, sleep medicine, dental and orthodontic care, and other specialties based on individual needs.
Adults & Children
Care is available for both adult and pediatric patients, with consideration for age-specific airway, sleep, functional, and developmental concerns.
Advancing the Understanding of Sleep, Breathing & Airway Function
In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Zaghi is actively involved in research and professional education.
His research interests include sleep-disordered breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, upper airway resistance, nasal obstruction, pediatric sleep disorders, tongue-tie and tethered oral tissues, myofunctional therapy, frenuloplasty, craniofacial and airway development, and maxillofacial airway surgery.
Dr. Zaghi has authored and contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications and is an invited lecturer, author, and journal reviewer on topics related to sleep, breathing, airway function, and tongue-tie disorders.
A Functional Airway Perspective
Sleep and breathing concerns may involve more than one part of the airway. Dr. Zaghi evaluates how airway anatomy, nasal breathing, tongue mobility, oral function, sleep, and breathing patterns may interact when developing an individualized care plan.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, disrupting normal breathing and sleep quality.
Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS)
Increased resistance to airflow during sleep may contribute to repeated sleep disruption and symptoms such as unrefreshing sleep, fatigue, or daytime sleepiness.
Snoring
Snoring may occur when tissues in the upper airway vibrate as air moves through a narrowed or restricted breathing passage during sleep.
Nasal Obstruction
Structural or inflammatory conditions—including a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, and nasal valve dysfunction—may make comfortable nasal breathing more difficult.
Tongue-Tie & Tethered Oral Tissues
Restricted tongue mobility may affect oral function. Evaluation considers tongue mobility and function in the context of the patient’s symptoms and overall clinical presentation.
Mouth Breathing & Dysfunctional Breathing
Persistent mouth breathing may be associated with nasal obstruction, oral function, airway anatomy, or other contributing factors that warrant further evaluation.
Pediatric Sleep & Breathing Concerns
Children may experience snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, and other symptoms that warrant assessment of the upper airway, sleep, breathing, and development.
Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders
Altered patterns of tongue posture, swallowing, oral function, and breathing may be evaluated as part of a broader functional airway assessment.
Understanding the Airway Before Choosing a Treatment
There is no single treatment that is appropriate for every patient with snoring, sleep apnea, nasal obstruction, or functional airway concerns.
Evaluation is designed to identify relevant contributors to each patient’s symptoms so treatment recommendations can be tailored to the individual’s anatomy, function, sleep findings, health history, and goals.
Diagnostic Evaluation May Include
Non-Surgical & Adjunctive Treatment Options
Depending on the patient’s needs, care may involve:
Minimally Invasive & Office-Based Procedures
Appropriate patients may be evaluated for procedures such as:
Surgical Treatment Options
When surgery is clinically appropriate, treatment options may include:
The appropriate treatment pathway depends on the patient’s diagnosis, airway anatomy, functional findings, prior treatments, and overall clinical needs.
Dr. Zaghi and The Breathe Institute offer virtual screenings for patients seeking expert guidance on nasal obstruction, snoring, sleep apnea, tongue-tie, and breathing-related concerns
Start With a Better Understanding of Your Symptoms
Dr. Zaghi and The Breathe Institute offer online screenings for patients seeking specialized guidance regarding nasal obstruction, snoring, sleep apnea, tongue-tie, mouth breathing, and other airway-related concerns.
Virtual screenings can provide an opportunity to discuss symptoms, review available testing or prior evaluations, and better understand potential next steps.
An online screening does not replace an in-person examination or diagnostic testing when either is clinically necessary.
